A 62-year-old man was found dead Tuesday after an early morning house fire in Pasadena, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.
After receiving a call from a working BGE contractor, firefighters responded to the 100 block of Hickory Point Road at approximately 12:30 a.m., according to a news release. There, they found a “significant fire showing from the first floor” of a home.
Authorities entered the house and were able to control the fire in approximately 30 minutes, according to the release.
Afterwards, during a search of the home, firefighters found the body of Stephen Geisendaffer Sr. in a common room on the first floor, said Capt. Jenny Macallair, a department spokesperson.
The victim was found close to where investigators believe the fire started, according to the release.
Macallair said Tuesday it’s unclear whether Geisendaffer was aware of the fire and was trying to get out, or if he had become disoriented.
Investigators are working to determine the origin and cause of the fire, according to the release, which noted there were functional smoke detectors inside Geisendaffer’s house.
Macallair said Tuesday’s incident serves as an important reminder for families to develop a home escape plan for emergencies.
Common steps recommended by the fire department include finding two ways out of each room; picking a meeting place outside to gather; and ensuring there are working smoke detectors inside.
The precautions, Macallair said, provide occupants with a “mental map” on how to survive a fire and check in on the safety of others.”
The Anne Arundel County Fire Department has now responded to two fatal fires this year.
The first took place Feb. 20 in Annapolis and resulted in the deaths of an 84-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman.
Tuesday’s incident also comes two days after another house fire in Pasadena, one in which a man was found dead. It was determined, however, that the man died by suicide after “intentionally” starting the fire, so his death was not tallied as a fire casualty.
