The United States reportedly has new intelligence indicating Israel is planning to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, a move that could complicate diplomatic efforts.
According to CNN, U.S. officials said such an attack would counter President Donald Trump’s commitment to finding a diplomatic solution with Iran.
“I don’t like permanent enemies … I want to make a deal with Iran,” Trump said during his trip to Gulf states last week, emphasizing his preference for diplomacy.
The U.S. and Iran are currently engaged in direct talks, with Trump saying the U.S. has proposed a nuclear deal to Iran, urging them to accept it.
U.S. and Iran are scheduled to meet Friday in Rome for a fifth round of negotiations that could see Tehran limit or end its enrichment of uranium.
On Wednesday, Iran Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi insisted Iran will never stop enriching uranium.
Araghchi warned Thursday his country would take “special measures in defense of our nuclear facilities” if Israel continues to threaten Tehran’s atomic sites, raising the stakes further, according to the Associated Press.
His comments offered no specifics, but international inspectors have seen their access to Iran’s program limited.
Earlier this month, Danny Citrinowicz, an expert on Iran and senior analyst with the Institute for National Security Studies, an independent think tank at Tel Aviv University, said the U.S. and Israel have different priorities.
“For the U.S., the most important thing is for Iran to not have a nuclear weapon. For Israel, the most important thing is toppling the regime. So there are different views,” he said.
Iran is arguably the weakest it’s been in decades after Israel bombed its missile production facilities and air defenses, along with the decimation of its proxies like Hezbollah. This could incentivize Israel’s desire to strike soon.
Citrinowicz said even though Iran is weak, it’s still a formidable enemy.
“I think that Iran is weaker, but still Iran is strong in a way that it has thousands of missiles, long-range and short-range,” he said. “So in a way, yes, Iran has gotten weaker since the seventh of October, but it’s still strong enough to conduct war if and when someone will attack.”
Trump has made it clear that if diplomatic talks with Iran fail, airstrikes would be considered.
Meanwhile, Trump is advancing with his “Golden Dome Project,” an aerial defense system akin to Israel’s “Iron Dome.”
Trump has selected a design and appointed Space Force Gen. Michael Guetlein to lead the project, which is expected to cost $175 billion and be completed before Trump leaves office.
