The conditions Friday and Saturday were just perfect for South River’s running game.

Playing in rainy conditions both nights, the Seahawks used their dangerous rushing attack to defeat Glen Burnie, 40-0, in a game that began Friday night and was suspended to 24 hours later.

Joe Foy and Nate Carbaugh combined for 249 yards, while Delvin Johnson entered the game late and added 67 yards and a touchdown for South River, which rushed for 342 yards.

“With the guys we have in the backfield, the approach is we’re going to run it as long as we can,” South River coach Ed Dolch said. “When teams make adjustments, I have faith in the guys on the outside that we can go to the pass.”

Foy, who ran for 157 yards and two scores in last week’s win over Meade, ran for 160 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from David Foust before the game was suspended on Friday.

“I just run as hard as I can and try to make something out of nothing,” Foy said. “When my line gets a good push, I can break one free.”

Carbaugh added 89 yards, Johnson scored on a 33-yard run and backup quarterback Mike Lee added a 14-yard touchdown for South River, which has won four of its last five games dating back to the final three games of the 2017 season.

“There’s definitely a connection. A lot of these guys have been in the program for a few years,” Dolch said. “We’re definitely seeing that their confidence is in part due to last year. At the same time, these guys are hungry. There’s another step and another level where we want to put ourselves.”

Foy scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half and staked the Seahawks to a 19-0 lead at the break. His second touchdown, a 4-yard run, came on South River’s fourth play after getting a quick stop on the Gophers when the game resumed Saturday night.

“It was very important to get the early lead,” Dolch said. “We knew we were in for a physical battle and we had to play assignment football, maintain gap integrity and not let them get loose. When you play a team like that, it’s always important to try and get a fast start.”

Once play resumed on Saturday, Michael Malone, Liam Hay and Carbaugh had tackles for losses and Carbaugh had an interception for the Seahawks.

South River struck first on the 36-yard pass from Foust to Foy for a 6-0 lead with 9:52 left in the first half. Foy lined up in the slot and beat a Glen Burnie defender to the end zone on a perfect strike from Foust following successive holding penalties.

The lead increased to 12-0 on a 53-yard run by Carbaugh with 3:48 left in the second quarter. Carbaugh appeared down near the line of scrimmage, but no whistle was sounded and Carbaugh kept running unopposed to the end zone.
