Severna Park knocks off Glen Burnie, 54-33
Falcons advance to play unbeaten Old Mill
With everyone starting with a clean slate in the playoffs, Severna Park girls basketball coach Lisa Magness had to make sure her team knew it could be knocked off by Glen Burnie on Saturday.
Now, she has to get her team to believe it can do the same against Old Mill.
Sophomore guard Jessica Giblin scored 12 of her team-high 15 points in the second half and added six rebounds and three steals to help the Falcons hold off, then eventually pull away from Glen Burnie in a 54-33 victory in a Class 4A East Section I quarterfinal.
Severna Park (13-10) advances to play at top-seeded and unbeaten Old Mill in Tuesday's section semifinals.
“We told them that you have to take every opponent seriously because everybody comes differently in the playoffs,” Magness said. “I do think we have a shot [against Old Mill] if we play well. We're basically going to have to play flawlessly. If we believe in each other — and I think we're starting to — I think we can bring it to them.”
Giblin came off the bench and hit a 3-pointer three minutes into the second quarter to give the Falcons a 26-8 lead. Glen Burnie made a run and cut the lead to nine at the half, but Giblin added 12 more points in the second half to help the Falcons pull away.
Erin Carroll helped the Falcons build the big first-quarter lead with eight points in the opening frame and finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists. She drove and scored in the final seconds of the third quarter during an 11-0 run that helped the Falcons blow the game open after leading by 10 midway through the third.
“That start was very important. We always try to come out as fast as we can,” Carroll said. “We're trying to play every game like it's our last, and this one could have been.”
Katie DeFeo added 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks for the Falcons, who lost to Old Mill, 64-48, in the teams' regular-season meeting. Caroline Duffy had a team-high 11 rebounds to go with her six points for Severna Park.
“We have to be very smart with our decisions and have less turnovers than today,” Carroll said. “We just need to be an overall good team and a smart team.”
Tierra Harris scored 10 points and Cameron Dailey added eight for Glen Burnie, which fought back from a 17-point deficit after one and made it a game until the Falcons pulled away late.
“We haven't been able to put together four quarters all season,” Glen Burnie coach Kristofer Dean said. “We did play hard today, so I was happy about that. All I ask is that we compete, and we did.”
