One theme for the BSO Gala? A night filled with stars, whether it was inside the VIP Party tent, or onstage later in Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, when famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma would perform with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Sloane Brown photos

Just in case it was still assumed that orchestral music belonged in an earlier, more stodgy era, partygoers only had to check out the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Gala VIP Party to know that assumption was outdated.
Some 700 young and old folks filled the party tent pitched outside Meyerhoff Symphony Hall for the sold-out soiree.
Gone was the old black-tie requirement. Those who wanted to dress to the nines could do so, and those who were happier in cocktail party attire could hit their comfort level, as well. No stuffy sit-down dinner, either; guests browsed food stations and bars and enjoyed the repast at their own speed.
Speaking of speed, BSO Music Director Jonathon Heyward quickly made the rounds to warmly greet guests, before heading across the street to prepare for the evening’s concert featuring famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
The evening concluded with an after-concert party in the tent.
