State stops processing tax returns from more preparers
Comptroller Peter Franchot on Tuesday said his office has stopped processing electronic and paper tax filings from 11 more tax preparation businesses at 14 locations in Maryland, citing “a high volume of questionable returns.”
Franchot's office said the suspensions were based on the presence of a high volume of “suspicious” characteristics on returns submitted by those locations, such as significant changes in refund requests from the previous year or inflated or undocumented business expenses.
The decision comes after earlier announcements that the office was no longer processing returns from 23 Liberty Tax Service franchises and three other private preparers. Liberty Tax has said it is investigating the concerns.
