The Orioles placed infielder Jordan Westburg and catcher Gary Sánchez on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left hamstring strain and right wrist inflammation, respectively. The team announced the moves minutes before first pitch of their series opener against the Yankees.
Baltimore recalled infielder Emmanuel Rivera and catcher Maverick Handley from Triple-A Norfolk to fill their spots on the active roster and transferred injured outfielder Colton Cowser and right-hander Grayson Rodriguez to the 60-day IL in corresponding moves. The club also announced a waiver claim for left-hander Walter Pennington, plucking him from the Texas Rangers and optioning him to Norfolk to fill out its 40-man roster.
Westburg, 26, was absent from the Orioles’ lineups Sunday and Monday because of the hamstring injury. Manager Brandon Hyde said Monday afternoon that Westburg was undergoing further testing to determine the severity.
The 2024 American League All-Star got off to a slow start but was starting to find a rhythm, going 9-for-29 (.310) with four extra-base hits and an .862 OPS over his previous seven games before the injury.
“He’s day to day as of right now,” Hyde said before the moves were announced. “We’re still doing some tests on him and getting checked out. So, I’m staying optimistic and hopeful, but he’s got some hamstring soreness.”
Ramón Urías started at third base and Jackson Holliday was in his usual position of second Monday against the Yankees. With Westburg now sidelined until at least May 7, the Orioles could opt to give top prospect Coby Mayo a look; Mayo is hitting .256 with four home runs and an .861 OPS in Triple-A this season.
Sánchez, 32, will miss the chance to face his former team in the Yankees. He has played sparingly as the primary backup to Adley Rutschman, hitting .100 (3-for-30) with four RBIs and 12 strikeouts.
Rivera returns for his second stint with the Orioles after getting an opportunity with the club down the stretch last season amid the club’s injury woes. He hit .313 with four home runs and a .948 OPS while seeing time at both first and third base but was left off the club’s playoff roster after Westburg, Urías and Ryan Mountcastle all returned in time.
Handley, the Orioles’ sixth-round pick in 2019, has never appeared in the majors. He got off to a scorching start in Norfolk, slashing .346/.433/.558 with a home run and five RBIs in 15 games.
