The Pikesville High School principal who was allegedly framed with an artificial-intelligence-made audio clip by the school’s athletic director will no longer lead the high school.

Eric Eiswert will be the next principal of Sparrows Point Middle School instead, replacing Mary Boswell-McComas, who was selected as Kent County’s new superintendent. Eiswert, who left Pikesville High in January after the release of the deep fake racist recording, plans to meet with the school community over the summer.

April Franklin, formerly principal of Southwest Academy Magnet School in Woodlawn, will serve as principal of Pikesville High, BCPS spokesperson Gboyinde Onijala confirmed Thursday.

Baltimore County Superintendent Myriam Rogers said in an April news conference that Eiswert would not return to Pikesville High after the scandal.

Pikesville High Athletic Director Dazhon Darien, 32, is charged with disrupting school activities, theft, retaliating against a witness and stalking after police say he used artificial intelligence to impersonate Eiswert’s voice making racist and antisemitic comments. The recording was shared widely on social media and sparked community outrage.

The criminal case, which Baltimore County’s state’s attorney said is one of the country’s first involving AI, cast a spotlight on the school system’s hiring practices. In a May news conference, Rogers fielded questions from reporters about whether Darien had met minimum requirements to be an athletic director and if he’d used false information on his resume.

School officials checked Darien’s references, his credentials and an FBI database as part of the district’s hiring process, Rogers said.

“But that doesn’t mean that even if any individual passes through successfully, all of these steps, that there can’t be misinformation that is included,” she said. The district is updating its technology system, which will better catch applicants using bad information, she added.

Rogers said in April that she recommended Darien’s termination. Onijala was unable to provide an update on whether the system still employs him due to it being a personnel matter, she said.

Rogers said the district would investigate two Pikesville physical education teachers who police say were involved in the scheme. Onijala said Thursday that BCPS’ Office of Human resources is “following all system procedures for investigating [the teachers’] involvement.”

Detectives believe Darien created the fake recording in retaliation for Eiswert investigating him for allegedly misusing school funds and theft. Eiswert also believed Darien had a grievance over his contract not being renewed and Eiswert reprimanding him for firing a long-term coach without approval, he told police.

Darien does not have an attorney listed in online court records. He has an initial appearance in Baltimore County Circuit Court on July 8.

BCPS’ Kyria Joseph, executive director for high schools, and George Roberts, consulting administrator, took over leading Pikesville High when Eiswert left.
