Carlos Raba, who reached the James Beard Award semifinals for Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic in 2022, has closed his Towson restaurant, according to a post on social media.

Rabab had been rotating menu items, developing partnerships and using promotions “to stay afloat” but he could not keep the doors open at Nana Baltimore in the 6900 block of York Road.

“We can no longer sustain Nana and have made the extremely heart-wrenching decision to shut Nana’s doors,” the restaurant posted on social media. “Effective today. And it hurts. Nana was a vision that came from honoring Carlos’ great grandmother, a strong woman that dedicated herself to her family and the kitchen.”

Raba also co-owns Clavel with Lane Harlan, another Mexican restaurant in the Remington neighborhood. Clavel is a three-time finalist for James Beard’s Outstanding Bar award.

Nonetheless, the closing of Nana is disheartening. The restaurant served classic Mexican dishes with some twists, such as the “Doggos,” a bacon-wrapped chicken hot dog with avocado sauce, mayonnaise and pico de gallo.

“Nana was a place that allowed him and the team to explore creativity through food, meet so many new neighbors and families and expanded our collaborations with other local culinary and music artists in the industry,” the restaurant’s post read. “We’ve met so many amazing people and are truly grateful for all who stopped by.

“There will never be enough words to thank you all for sharing space with us, stories, feedback and love on this beautiful community corner in Towson. We will miss serving you all.”
