Call Your Mother, a Washington D.C.-based bagel chain, is coming to Annapolis, joining Crumbl Cookie at the Annapolis Harbour Center. It is expected to open this summer, depending on when permits are issued.

This will be the chain’s second storefront in Maryland, not counting a trailer and a farmers market location, and the only store in Anne Arundel County. The website lists 20 more locations in D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and Colorado.

The shop features classic bagel deli fare, with a wide variety of breakfast sandwiches and coffee. It also serves lunch

The founders, married couple Daniela Moreira and Andrew Dana, opened their first bagel shop in 2018. They say the business combines Dana’s Jewish heritage, Moreira’s Argentinian heritage, and Moreira’s experience as a professional chef to give classic deli items a twist.

According to Dana, starting a bagel shop made good on a dream of his father’s, and Moreira had never had a bagel up to that point, meaning she could go into the business with a fresh perspective.

Besides the classics, they have some non-traditional bagel flavors, like maple salt and pepper, as well as Za’Atar, a Middle Eastern herb blend. On the website, the describe their bagels as being somewhere between a New York-style and Montreal-style, which tend to be a bit sweeter.

“You know, when you live with your business partner, you’re sort of always looking for inspiration,” Dana said. “So, the maple salt and pepper I actually bought [Moreira] as a gift when I was coming back from upstate New York, this little seasoning of maple salt and pepper, and then she said, ‘Oh my God, I think this would make a great bagel flavor,’ and she started to get in the lab and mix with it.”

The pair also had a hand in starting Timber Pizza Company, another small chain gaining a foothold in Anne Arundel County with a location in Annapolis and another soon to open in Edgewater. Dana said the new Call Your Mother location was inspired by spending time in the area with Timber co-founder Chris Brady, who is from Annapolis.
