A 33-year-old man is in custody after police said he shot and killed both of his grandparents in a double homicide early Monday in Columbia, according to the Howard County Police Department..
Police charged DiAngelo Smith with two counts of first-degree murder in connection to the deaths of his grandparents, 78-year-old Jack Dee Stokes and 65-year-old Barbara Stokes, according to the Monday news release.
Police were called at 3:07 a.m. and found a man with a gun sitting in a parked car outside the home on the 6300 block of Red Haven Road, later taking him into custody.
Police believe Smith lived with his grandparents in the home. Investigators also believe Smith shot the victims before returning to his car, according to a news release.
The shooting is still under investigation, with police saying Smith’s motive remains unclear. He is being held without bail on first-degree murder and related charges at the Howard County Detention Center, the department said late Monday.
Only two days before, Columbia saw another double shooting near The Mall in Columbia, leaving one teen dead and another critically wounded. A suspect in that shooting is in custody.
