


Ohio State celebrated its recent national championship with 30,000 Buckeyes fans at Ohio Stadium.
Fans braved 30-degree temperatures to cheer a team that beat five top-10 rivals on its way to the title, including Oregon in the Rose Bowl, Texas in the Cotton Bowl and Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff championship game.
“It took everybody to become national champions, and today we thank you,” Buckeyes coach Ryan Day told the crowd.
Ohio State was the first to win the inaugural four-team playoff a decade ago and became the first to win the 12-team version.
It did so in dominating fashion, trailing for just 6 minutes, 5 seconds across 240 minutes of playing time and beating every opponent by double figures.
College basketball: Vanderbilt was fined $500,000 by the SEC for allowing fans to storm the court Saturday after the Commodores’ 74-69 victory over No. 9 Kentucky. Vanderbilt was penalized for a third offense under the conference’s revised access to competition area policy. The fine will be paid to the University of Kentucky.
Golf: Spain’s Alejandro del Rey claimed his first European tour title in impressive fashion, winning the Ras Al Khaimah Championship in the UAE.
Soccer: Police are investigating “abhorrent attacks” aimed at Premier League referee Michael Oliver and his family following the match between Wolverhampton and Arsenal. Oliver was the referee for Saturday’s game at Molineux which Arsenal won 1-0 after both teams had a man sent off.
Women’s basketball: Lauren Betts scored a career-high 33 points and No. 1 UCLA defeated No. 8 Maryland 82-67. The Bruins (20-0, 8-0 Big Ten) have won their last 19 games by double figures. The host Terrapins (16-4, 6-3) have dropped three in a row.
