2 Terps facing assault counts
Harrison, Turner arrested in incident involving BB gun
Maryland football players Lorenzo Harrison and DJ Turner were arrested by campus police Wednesday for their involvement in a BB gun incident on campus Nov.?6, the university announced.
The players, who are freshmen and were high school teammates at nearby DeMatha, have been charged with three counts each of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, and one count each of threatening bodily harm while on university grounds.
Both players had been suspended indefinitely by the athletic department before Saturday's home loss to then-No. 5 Ohio State. A third player, Antoine Brooks, who was also suspended, was not charged by police and has been reinstated for Saturday's game against No.?18 Nebraska.
The Maryland athletic department issued a statement: “We are aware of the situation and take these matters very seriously. The two student-athletes involved have been suspended indefinitely for violating the student-athlete code of conduct. This matter has also been referred to the Office of Student Conduct for further review.”
Harrison, the team's second-leading rusher, was just 57 yards short of breaking the school's all-time freshman rushing record. Turner is a backup wide receiver who played on special teams.
The investigation began last week when three students told police they had been hit by BB gun pellets.
One was riding his bike on Paint Branch Drive between the Kim Engineering and Biomolecular Science buildings. Two other students, a male and a female, were hit while walking on the sidewalk along Stadium Drive between the Stadium Drive Garage and Ellicott Hall.
