President-elect Donald Trump has moved quickly to begin filling Cabinet and staff positions for his second administration.
His selections will begin work following his swearing-in on Jan. 20. Some appointments will require Senate confirmation, however Trump has pressed Senate GOP to allow recess appointments.
Trump, a Republican, was elected Nov. 5. He will have a GOP-controlled Senate to work with following an election in which Democrats lost their majority. The House is also likely to be in Republican hands, although a number of California races remain too close to call.
Here are Trump’s top Cabinet and staff picks so far:
Matt Gaetz, attorney general.The Republican congressman represents Florida and would fill the role of the nation’s top prosecutor.
Tulsi Gabbard, director of national intelligence.Gabbard is a former Democratic member of Congress and presidential candidate.
Pete Hegseth, Defense secretary. He is a Fox News host. “With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice — Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down,” Trump wrote of Hegseth, who is an Army veteran.
Marco Rubio, secretary of state. Rubio, the Florida senator and one-time presidential candidate, will be appointed to the position as the country’s top diplomat, according to multiple news reports.
Kristi Noem, Homeland Security secretary.She is the governor and former congresswoman from South Dakota. “I look forward to working with Border Czar Tom Homan to make America safe again,” Noem said.
Lee Zeldin, Environmental Protection Agency secretary.He is a Republican and former New York congressman who ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2022.
Elise Stefanik, United Nations ambassador.The New York congresswoman is currently the House Republican Conference Chair,
John Ratcliffe, CIA director.He is a former Texas congressman who was National Intelligence director during part of Trump’s first administration.
Susie Wiles, White House chief of staff.Wiles is a political consultant who was co-chair of Trump’s 2024 campaign.
Tom Homan, border czar.Homan is a former Immigration and Customs Enforcement director and immigration hard-liner.
Mike Huckabee, ambassador to Israel.He was Arkansas governor from 1996-2007.
Mike Waltz, national security adviser.He is a former Green Beret and Florida congressman.
Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, leaders of new “Department of Government Efficiency.”“Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies,” Trump said in a statement. Musk is ranked by Forbes as the richest man in the world, and the billionaire business owner has lucrative government contracts. Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur, previously ran in the 2024 Republican presidential primary and called for shutting down the FBI, Department of Education and other federal agencies. He supported Trump in the presidential contest before dropping out of the race and becoming one of his top surrogates.
