A 16-year-old was arrested and charged in connection with an assault that left one student injured near Kenwood High School, Baltimore County Police Department said.

Officers were notified at about 2 p.m. Wednesday that a Kenwood High student was assaulted off campus in the 500 block of Stemmers Run Road, which is across the street from the school on a residential corner in Essex.

The student returned to the building and was treated by the school nurse.

When the student came back to the building, the school decided to enter lockdown protocol out of caution and contact the police to ensure there were no other threats, according to a Baltimore County Public Schools spokesperson.

Medics transported the injured student, who had what appeared to be a non-life-threatening injury, to a local hospital, police said.

According to a message sent to the school community, the lockdown was lifted at 2:25 p.m., and dismissal took place as scheduled. In lockdown status, doors inside and outside are locked, and everyone shelters in place, as opposed to a lockout, when the school’s exterior doors are locked but regular instruction continues.

The suspect was taken into custody Wednesday evening and charged as an adult, police said.
