All was quiet at Dunbar High School and the National Academy Foundation after the shooting of a 15-year-old Dunbar student outside NAF prompted both schools to be closed Tuesday.
Officers responded to a Shot Spotter alert at approximately 3:23 p.m. Monday, about 30 minutes after Dunbar High had dismissed school for the day.
Near the National Academy Foundation, which sits behind Dunbar on North Caroline Street, investigators say officers found the 15-year-old male student with multiple gunshot wounds.
FOX45 News obtained the 911 dispatch audio that captured the response to the shooting.
Portions of the Broadcastify audio included the following:
“Shot Spotter Alert. 400 North Caroline Street. 10 rounds.”
“Dispatch: Shooting. 540 North Caroline. National Academy. Caller says a student was shot.”
“School Police is 1023. I have one down at the steps.”
“Officer: Right now the victim is suffering from three gunshot wounds. One to the neck. One to the abdomen and one to the right leg.”
The teen was rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital in critical condition, police said.
According to Baltimore Police as of Tuesday afternoon, the teen had been stabilized following surgery.
Back at the scene dispatch audio indicated officers were talking with witnesses and following leads on possible suspects.
“Officer: Is there any suspect information yet?”
“Dispatch: “Number one male gray jacket. A young male armed with a gun. Fired several shots. Last seen running towards Washington Street.”
“Officer: “We’ve got three Black juveniles wearing all black. They last ran up the 600 block of McElderry Street.
“Officer: A number one male. Khaki pants, tan hoodie with red writing. Running on foot towards Monument Street.”
During an initial press briefing about an hour after Monday’s shooting, Commissioner Richard Worley told the perpetrators to “turn yourself in.
“We’re going to find you,” he said. “There’s too much video. There’s too many witnesses.”
When questioned the commissioner said he didn’t know if the suspect was also a student or what led up to the shooting.
During the briefing, detectives could be seen canvassing the area between the two schools gathering any ballistic evidence and surveillance footage.
“If it is determined the suspect in this case was a young person here we are again talking about young people being involved in crimes of violence,” said Clyde Boatwright, President of Baltimore City Schools Police Union.
“Thankfully under Maryland law at the time this occurred our officers were authorized to be armed and respond to this type of situation,” said Boatwright.
Last year there were several incidents involving Dunbar students and guns and/or violence.
Incidents include last December when a student was found with three loaded guns.
Another incident involved a student who accidentally shot himself while on school property.
Another case involved a Dunbar student who was arrested in the school parking lot for murders that occurred off campus.
While the circumstances surrounding this shooting outside the National Academy Foundation remain under investigation, parents say they’re fed up with the violence.
“No one wants to see their kid shot and hurt. The violence needs to stop,” said one parent following the shooting.
Baltimore Police have not identified the 15-year-old victim. No arrests have been made.
