Former Vice President Mike Pence said it was “admirable” that current Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the certification of the results of the November presidential election, which she lost.
He wrote Monday in a post on social media platform X that Harris and members of the Democratic and Republican parties confirmed the results without any objections.
“I also commend the members of the House, Senate and the Vice President who did their duty under the Constitution of the United States, it being particularly admirable that Vice President Harris would preside over the certification of a presidential election that she lost,” Pence wrote.
He said earlier in the post that he welcomes the return of order and civility to the proceedings, congratulating President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance on their victory.
“The peaceful transfer of power is the hallmark of our democracy and today, members of both parties in the House and Senate along with the vice president certified the election of our new president and vice president without controversy or objection,” the post reads.
“God bless our new President and Vice President and their families and may God continue to bless the United States of America,” Pence continued.
Four years ago, the certification of the 2020 presidential election results was delayed after supporters of Trump, who lost the race, rioted at the Capitol.
Harris declared the 2024 results certified less than 30 minutes after the session began. She said in a video posted on X the peaceful transfer of power is “one of the most fundamental principles of American democracy.”
“As much as any other principle, it is what distinguishes our system of government from monarchy or tyranny,” she said. “As we have seen, our democracy can be fragile, and it is up to then each one of us to stand up for our most cherished principles and to make sure that in America, our government always remains of the people, by the people and for the people.”
