A current Safe Streets employee was shot blocks from his workplace over the weekend, FOX45 News confirmed.

The victim was shot just before 10 p.m. Saturday along the 1300 block of N. Carey Street in the Western Police District. The shooting took place within the Sandtown Winchester Safe Streets catchment zone, and less than a half mile away from the Safe Streets site itself.

According to the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, MONSE, and Catholic Charities, which operates the Sandtown site, said in a joint statement that the victim is a violence interrupter and was shot while off-duty.

The organizations did not provide a work history for the victim, including how long he has worked for the Safe Streets program.

The victim’s injuries appear to be severe, according to the first-responder radio audio reviewed by FOX45 News.

“2100 was notified and the lab was requested,” according to the scanner audio; 2100 is police code for the homicide unit.

“Our hearts are with this worker, his family, Sandtown site staff, and the extended Safe Streets family during this time,” according to a joint statement issued to FOX45 News from MONSE and Catholic Charities. “MONSE will continue working closely with Catholic Charities and site staff to finalize details for a shooting response in the community later this week.”

Trauma support has been initiated to ensure the well-being of the Sandtown Safe Streets employees, according to Catholic Charities.

Baltimore Police has not released the victim’s name, citing family notification before sharing such details. The case remains open, according to a BPD spokesperson, and no suspect information has been shared publicly.

The shooting of the Sandtown Safe Streets employee comes just weeks after a former Penn North Safe Streets was shot – also along North Carey Street – less than a month ago. Brandon Tucker was employed at the Penn North Safe Street site from April 1 through mid-May 2024, according to Catholic Charities which also manages that location. Catholic Charities refused to explain why Tucker’s employment with Safe Streets was so short. Tucker died from his injuries a few days after he was shot.

Baltimore Police said both incidents are being investigated independently.
