Rangers: The title defense for the Rangers is over. The reigning World Series champions were eliminated from postseason contention during their last homestand of the season. The Rangers went into Saturday night’s matchup with the Mariners eight games behind the Twins for the third AL wild card with eight to go. The Twins won the season series 5-2. The Astros entered Saturday with a magic number of four to clinch the division title. The Astros took the top spot in the AL West last season after tying the Rangers at 90-72 and winning the season series. The Rangers edged the Astros in a seven-game AL championship series last year before beating the Diamondbacks in five games in the World Series. “I’d say we’re all disappointed with where we’re at now,” Texas manager Bruce Bochy said before his club’s second-to-last game at Globe Life Field this season. “It’s always difficult when you see these teams clinch and celebrating and you’re not, especially coming off the year that we had.” ... Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer was scratched from his scheduled start for the Rangers on Saturday night, then put on the 15-day injured list with a left hamstring strain that means his season is over.

Phillies: Kyle Schwarber extended his major league record for leadoff homers, hitting his 15th of the season to start the Phillies’ game against the Mets on Saturday.

Reds: Elly De La Cruz hit a three-run homer, drove in four runs ad scored twice to lead the Reds to a 7-1 victory over the Pirates on Saturday. De La Cruz, who had three hits, joined Eric Davis and Barry Larkin as the only Reds’ players with 25 homers and 65 stolen bases in a season. He stole his 100th career base in his 251st game on Friday night.

Red Sox: The Red Sox placed third baseman Rafael Devers on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with left shoulder inflammation. Devers left Friday night’s 12-inning loss to the Minnesota Twins in the top of the 11th. The slugger went 1 for 4 with a walk and three strikeouts. Saturday’s game against the Twins was postponed because of rain. It was rescheduled as part of a Sunday doubleheader. Speaking before the game was rained out, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Devers tweaked his shoulder while working in the batting cage and tried to play through it. Devers, who turns 28 on Oct. 24, finalized a 10-year contract with the Red Sox in January 2023 that is worth $313.5 million.

Mets: Sean Manaea won his fourth straight decision, Brandon Nimmo hit a tiebreaking single in a three-run seventh inning and the Mets beat the Phillies 6-3 on Saturday to prevent the Phillies from clinching the NL East title.

Braves: Matt Olson broke a seventh-inning tie with a two-run homer and the Braves beat the Marlins 6-2 on Saturday to stay two games behind the Mets for the last NL wild card. Gio Urshela and Jorge Soler also went deep for the Braves. Marcell Ozuna and Michael Harris II each had three hits. Braves starter Max Fried allowed two runs and five hits over six innings. Fried walked one, struck out six and reached double-digit wins for the fourth time in his career.
