The Roman empire appears to be over.

Maryland running back Roman Hemby entered the transfer portal Monday, his agent Shawn O’Gorman confirmed to The Baltimore Sun, seemingly ending his tenure as the team’s starter for the past three years. The redshirt junior is expected to have one year of eligibility remaining.

Hemby led the Terps this past fall in carries (134), rushing yards (607) and touchdown runs (six). The Edgewood resident and John Carroll graduate also caught 40 passes for 273 yards and one score.

But the 6-foot, 208-pound Hemby’s rushing yards and attempts were the lowest of his career as a starter as the offense excelled more through the air under the direction of redshirt junior quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. and senior wide receivers Tai Felton and Kaden Prather. Edwards Jr. entered the transfer portal on Thursday.

Hemby’s departure would appear to open the door for Nolan Ray to fill the role as the 2025 starter. The 5-11, 215-pound redshirt freshman carried the ball 75 times for 374 yards and two touchdowns and gained more yards per attempt (5.0) than Hemby (4.5) did.

CBS Sports first reported the news of Hemby’s intention to transfer.
