A new cat-friendly cafe has opened in Fells Point.

Affogatto, founded by Maryland native Tony Cusimano, is at 600 South Wolfe St. and has an area called “the cat room,” where patrons can spend time with the felines.

“We aim to provide a safe space where our community can connect with each other, re-energize, and possibly adopt kittens that need forever homes,” Cusimano says on his website. “Studies show that spending time with animals can help reduce stress, increase serotonin, and provide companionship. Cat cafes are also a great way for humans to experience the joys of cats if their living situation doesn’t allow for it.

“Frankly, we also enjoy spending time around cats and their delightful and occasionally chaotic antics.”

Affogatto takes kittens from shelters that are near or over capacity. The cat lounge gives them space to run and play outside of a kennel and off euthanasia lists.

“We provide everything we can for the cats and follow our vets’ personalized protocols for each animal, and follow the Maryland SPCA adoption application, vetting process, and contract,” Cusimano says on the website.

The cat room is a secure area where customers can book appointments to hang out with kittens under supervision. However, customers are not allowed to bring in their own animals.

The restaurant offers tea, pastry, sandwiches and other food “inspired by the Mediterranean region” in the other half of the restaurant. Affogatto also has a curated selection of books, local art, merchandise and cat toys.

The new café is currently in its soft opening phase, with hours on Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The cat room is expected to be open by Thursday by appointment.
