Doué’s emergence powers PSG title

Translate Désiré Doué’s name into English and you get the words “coveted” and “gifted.” Both seem highly appropriate, considering how the 19-year-old’s stunning performance for Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday’s Champions League final launched him into soccer’s stratosphere, making Doué a player every team would love to have. Doué scored with two clinical finishes in a 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in Munich after setting up PSG’s first goal with a remarkable piece of close control. Controlling the ball on his left foot and spinning in one swift movement inside the penalty area, he then effortlessly switched feet and passed with his right to Achraf Hakimi. “I really don’t have the words to describe how I feel. What we did is magical. We showed we are a great side collectively,” said Doué, who turns 20 on Tuesday. “There are a lot of young players in the side who still need to improve, I am among them.” Doué improving is quite a scary thought, given how good he already is. Overall he scored 15 goals for PSG this season, including spectacular curlers from outside the penalty area with his right foot.

Emotional end of NBA era for TNT

Ernie Johnson could barely get the words out. The run of “Inside the NBA” on TNT came to an end on Saturday night after nearly four decades as a fixture of the league. The show will move to ESPN and ABC next season — and keep Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley together, still doing most shows from Atlanta — but the final TNT sign-off was an emotional one. “I’m proud to say for the last time, ‘Thanks for watching us. It’s the NBA on TNT,’ ” Johnson, above, said, before turning his back to the camera, placing his microphone on the desk and getting up from that set for the final time. NBA games will not be airing on TNT starting next season when the league’s new TV package kicks in — an 11-year deal worth at least $76 billion, one that keeps games on ABC and ESPN, brings the league back to NBC and starts a new relationship with Amazon Prime Video. ABC will broadcast the NBA Finals, meaning the end of the Eastern Conference finals between the Pacers and Knicks was the end of TNT’s run. NBA games were on TNT since the network launched in 1988.

Stark holds on at US Women’s Open

Maja Stark has lost her confidence heading into the U.S. Women’s Open. Her decision to stop worrying about that sparked her to the biggest title in women’s golf. The 25-year-old Swede shot an even-par 72 on Sunday and stayed ahead all day. Her four-day total of 7-under 281 at Erin Hills in Wisconsin left her two strokes ahead of top-ranked Nelly Korda and Japan’s Rio Takeda. “I think that I just stopped trying to control everything, and I just kind of let everything happen the way it happened,” said Stark, who became the sixth Swede to win a women’s major, and the first since Anna Nordqvist in the 2021 Women’s British Open. Stark also won her second career LPGA Tour title. The former Oklahoma State player is the first Swede to win a U.S. Women’s Open since Annika Sorenstam earned her third title in 2006. The only other Swede to win this event was Liselotte Neumann in 1988. “They texted me yesterday and just kind of said, ‘Bring it home,’ ” Stark said. Korda closed with a 71, and Takeda had a 72 to tie for second. —Associated Press
