Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pontiff, welcomed U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance to the Vatican on Monday.

During the visit, Vance presented Pope Leo with a letter from President Donald Trump, inviting him to the White House. The pope took the letter and put it on his desk and was heard saying “at some point,” in the video footage of the meeting provided by Vatican Media, according to the Associated Press.

If Leo visits the White House, it would be the first time a pope visited since Pope Francis saw then-President Obama in 2015, according to Axios. Leo’s visit would be the fourth time a pontiff came to the White House.

Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, was part of a delegation meeting with the Pope. He brought gifts, including two books by St. Augustine, “The City of God” and “On Christian Doctrine,” as well as a Chicago Bears jersey personalized with Pope Leo’s name. The Pope, originally from Chicago, received the gifts warmly.

“As you can probably imagine, people in the United States are extremely excited about you,” Vance said.

Leo gave Vance a bronze sculpture with the words in Italian “Peace is a fragile flower,” and a coffee-table sized picture book of the papal apartments in the Apostolic Palace. Leo noted that Francis had chosen not to live in them and added, “And I may live in, but it’s not totally decided.”

Vance attended the formal Mass on Sunday celebrating the first American pope, alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also Catholic. Both were at the meeting on Monday, Vance spokesperson Luke Schroeder said, according to AP. The two then met with the Vatican foreign minister, Archbishop Paul Gallagher.

Just before his death, Pope Francis met briefly with Vance on Easter Sunday. The Vatican said they met for a few minutes at the Domus Santa Marta “to exchange Easter greetings,” according to AP. Vance’s office said the vice president “expressed his gratitude to Pope Francis for inviting him to meet on Easter Sunday and for the hospitality the Vatican has extended to his family.”

Francis died the next day at 88 in his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump attended the funeral on April 26.

In related news, a Vatican spokesperson expressed the Holy See’s willingness to host peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, while continuing their humanitarian efforts in the region.
