METS: Making his first start since surgery to reposition the ulnar nerve in his right elbow in September, Jacob deGrom worked two perfect innings Saturday, threw a 97 mph fastball and struck out two in a 3-1 win over the Astros in West Palm Beach, Fla. “It’s a step in the right direction,” he said. “You say you are feeling good in the spring, but then to actually get out there in the game to throw, it definitely feels good.”
GIANTS: 1B Coach Jose Alguacil was taken to a hospital after being hit by a foul ball during a game against the Royals in Surprise, Ariz. Alguacil was hit in the face while sitting in a folding chair outside the dugout.
TIGERS: Closer Francisco Rodriguez had control trouble in his only game action before leaving for the World Baseball Classic, walking two in a brief stint against the Yankees in Lakeland, Fla. Rodriguez relieved in the fifth inning and exited with the bases loaded and two outs.
RED SOX: Ace David Price will be shut down for seven to 10 days, take anti-inflammatory medicine and be re-evaluated after that to determine when his ailing left elbow and forearm will heal enough for him to pitch in a game. “I’m not going to put a timetable on it,” Price said in Fort Myers, Fla. “If it doesn’t get better in a certain time period, it’s something we’re going to have to talk about again.”
EXTRA INNINGS: NL MVP Kris Bryant hit his first HR of the spring, a grand slam, as the Cubs defeated the Dodgers 9-3. ... Astros starter Lance McCullers felt strong after pitching a simulated game in West Palm Beach, Fla. His next stop could be a Grapefruit League mound. McCullers has been on a tailored throwing program as he works his way back from an elbow strain that shortened his 2016 season. He threw 43 pitches to C Evan Gattis, showcasing a fastball that touched 95 mph.
