Yankees: Slugger Giancarlo Stanton took batting practice with teammates on Tuesday as he continues to recover from elbow issues. Stanton took swings before the game at Progressive Field in Cleveland as the Yankees prepared for the middle game of their series against the Guardians. While Stanton has been working behind the scenes, this was the first time he has taken outdoor batting practice. Following the Yankees’ 3-2 loss, Boone wouldn’t characterize the importance of Stanton’s outdoor session. “I don’t know how significant because he’s been doing a lot more than that (inside),” Boone said. “But certainly it’s good to see him out there on the and in a (BP) group hitting. So I think all of us get a smile seeing that. But I don’t know if it’s a significant step because he’s been doing a lot more than that.” Stanton has been dealing with tendinitis in both elbows, with the ailment known as “tennis elbow” shutting him down since spring training. The 35-year-old has said his elbows also bothered him last season and it’s a matter of pain tolerance. The team doesn’t have a timetable for Stanton’s return to their lineup. It’s likely he’ll have to go on a minor league rehab assignment before he’s ready to play in major league games.

Padres: Nick Pivetta allowed two hits over seven innings and the Padres recorded their seventh shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over the host Tigers. Pivetta (4-1) became the first pitcher in franchise history to work scoreless ball in three of his first five starts for the club. Pivetta struck out six and only allowed one runner to reach second base. He’s 2-0 with a 0.45 ERA in his last three starts, giving up one run on nine hits in 20 innings. Elias Díaz homered for the Padres, who had lost four of six after a 14-3 start. Robert Suarez remained perfect in 10 save chances. The Tigers were held to three hits.

Nationals: Mitchell Parker pitched eight innings to combine on a one-hitter, Nathaniel Lowe and Dylan Crews homered, and the Nationals beat the visiting Orioles 7-0 in the opener of a three-game series. James Wood had three hits on his bobblehead night and scored twice for the Nationals, who won for the third time in four games. Keibert Ruiz and José Tena also had three-hit outings. The Orioles, playing for the first time since Sunday’s 24-2 loss to the Reds, didn’t get a runner past second base until the ninth. Cedric Mullins accounted for the Orioles’ lone hit with a one-out single in the third. Parker (3-1) struck out four and walked two while setting down his last 17 batters and lowering his ERA to 1.39. It was the longest outing of the left-hander’s 34-start big league career.

Extra innings: The Guardians placed OF Lane Thomas on the 10-day IL with a bruised right wrist sustained when he got hit by a pitch two weeks ago. Thomas was struck on April 8 in the home opener against the White Sox. The 29-year-old has played in just five games since, most recently on Sunday against the Pirates. ... Giants INF Casey Schmitt has a left oblique strain and will miss at least a month. Schmitt, 26, was injured in a batting cage last weekend.
