John I. McKenna, a retired Maryland juvenile services employee, died Sept. 22 from liver disease at his Lansdowne home. He was 85.

The son of John J. McKenna, a deliveryman, and Laverne E. Mueller, a homemaker, John I. McKenna was born in Baltimore and raised on Collins Avenue in Irvington.

After graduating in 1948 from Mount St. Joseph High School in Irvington, he served with the Air Force in Korea.

He earned a bachelor's degree in 1958 from what is now Loyola University Maryland and a law degree in 1963 from the University of Baltimore. In 1981, he earned a master's degree in business administration from Loyola.

Mr. McKenna worked for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company and the state health department, where he helped set up an HMO. He retired in 1990 from the state Department of Juvenile Services.

He coached baseball at St. Clement Roman Catholic Church. He was a member of the Mount St. Joseph alumni board for 42 years.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Rooks.

He was a deacon of the Roman Catholic church in the Archdiocese of Baltimore and served at St. Clement's, where he also taught religious classes.

A Mass of Christian burial was offered Saturday at his church.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Madalen Grace; three sons, John McKenna of Ellicott City, Patrick McKenna and Kevin McKenna, both of Elkridge; two daughters, Madalen O'Connell Kight of Lansdowne and Jeanette List of Lititz, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
