Italy Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, often referred to as the “Trump Whisperer,” was the first European leader to meet with President Donald Trump to discuss tariffs.
Within minutes of her arrival at the White House on Thursday, Trump said there will “100%” be a trade deal with the European Union by the end of his self-imposed 90-day deadline.
“Of course, there will be a trade deal, very much, they want to make one very, very much and we’re gonna make a trade deal. I fully expect it but it will be a fair deal,” Trump said.
Meloni said she cannot make a deal on behalf of the EU, but did agree a deal is possible.
“My goal would be, invite President Trump to pay an official visit to Italy and understand if there’s a possibility, when he comes, to organize also such a meeting with Europe. For I think the best way is that we simply speak frankly about the needs that every one of us has and find ourselves in the middle,” Meloni said.
A conservative whose strong beliefs align with Trump’s, she assumed her role as Italy’s prime minister in 2022. Meloni’s alliance with Trump began when they first met in December at the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, where she congratulated him on his win. After their initial meeting, Trump praised Meloni, calling her a “real live wire” with whom he could “work to straighten out the world a little bit.”
In January, Meloni visited Mar-a-Lago, where Trump described her as a “fantastic woman” who has “really taken Italy by storm.”
She was subsequently invited to his inauguration, one of six world leaders in attendance. In February, Meloni spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), defending Trump’s border policies and criticizing woke and cancel culture.
“We must say loudly and clearly to those who attack the West from the outside and to who try and sabotage on the inside, to those we must say to them we will never be ashamed of who we are,” Meloni said at the conference.
When asked during Meloni’s visit to the White House which countries he’s prioritizing in trade talks, Trump said, “Everybody’s on my priority list.”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said there will be meetings with South Korean officials next week and talks are also progressing with India. On Wednesday, Trump spoke by phone with Mexico’s president and met with a Japanese delegation.
“Everybody wants to make a deal and if they don’t want to make a deal, we’ll make the deal for them because that’s what’s going to happen. We’ll just say, ‘This is what it is,’ ” Trump said.
