Hard-throwing Pirates ace Paul Skenes capped a remarkable season by winning the National League Rookie of the Year Award on Monday while Luis Gil of the Yankees took the AL honor.
Skenes didn’t make his debut until May 11 but the right-hander was such an immediate sensation that he was selected to start the All-Star Game for the NL on July 16.
The 22-year-old Skenes, the first overall pick in the 2023 amateur draft, finished 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA in 23 starts. He struck out 170 and walked 32 in 133 innings.
The right-handed Gil, 26, went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the AL champs with 171 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings.
Outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and pitcher CC Sabathia are among 14 new candidates on the Hall of Fame ballot, joining 14 holdovers led by reliever Billy Wagner.
College football: Florida Atlantic fired coach Tom Herman. The Owls were 4-8 in his first season last year and are 2-8 this season.
NBA: Clippers G James Harden on Sunday broke a tie with Hall of Famer Ray Allen for the No. 2 spot on the NBA’s career 3-points list. Harden, 35, entered Monday’s game against the Warriors with 2,974 3-pointers. The only player ahead of Harden on the list is the Warriors’ Stephen Curry (3,782 through Sunday).
NHL: Mathieu Olivier scored short-handed in a three-goal first period and the last-place Blue Jackets beat the host Bruins 5-1. Justin Danforth also scored a short-handed goal for the Jackets. The Bruins lost their third straight game.
