There is a growing list of examples that President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement is being fought on multiple fronts nationwide.
In addition to new aggressive actions on immigration enforcement, arrests and deportations, his administration appears to be going after elected officials they say are standing in the way of carrying out the policies.
The latest spat involves Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, and White House Border Czar Tom Homan.
Homan said in an interview on Fox News Wednesday, “We all know what she is doing. She is educating illegal alien criminals how to evade law enforcement.“
He was responding to Ocasio-Cortez’s work to educate undocumented immigrants, hosting webinars and putting out information, part of a campaign she calls “Know your Rights.”
During a February video post, she gave several examples.
“If ICE comes to your workplace, if ICE comes to your door, you do not have to open the door; ask them for a judicial warrant, not an administrative warrant.”
She also warned them, “ICE very often tries to show you some official-looking paper in order to intimidate people and to let them in,” adding, “They rely on the perception of power.”
Ocasio-Cortez even asked U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi in February if she was under investigation for the webinars. It’s one of the many battles playing out between elected Democrats and the Trump administration. On Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem went to Springfield, Illinois, where she highlighted the death of Emma Schafer, a 24-year-old killed in 2023.
“Where’s the compassion for Emma, who died on this street?” Noem said.
The suspect, Gabriel Calixto, was Emma’s ex-boyfriend and was supposed to be deported years before, but never was, and remains at large.
The victim’s parents accused Noem of using their daughter’s death “to advance a cruel and heartless political agenda,” and were reportedly protesting the visit, along with other protesters. Some yelled, “How dare you use Emma for your racist agenda?”
Noem took the opportunity to again blame Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker for his state’s sanctuary policies, which she said protected the suspect.
“Governors like JB Pritzker don’t care if gangbangers, murders rapist and pedophiles room free in his state. If they are here legally, he is going to protect them,” she said. Pritzker is one of three Democratic governors called to testify about those policies on Capitol Hill next month.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, as well as Minnesota Gov Tim Walz have also been asked to appear. They’ve been told to provide documentation and answer questions about their policies to protect those living in the country illegally.
Trump has multiple times threatened to block federal funds from sanctuary cities and states, an action which, for now, has been blocked by a federal judge, who declared such spending powers are constitutionally vested in Congress.
