The Orioles are digging into their catcher depth chart for the second time in three days.

Baltimore placed Maverick Handley on the 7-day concussion injured list Monday and selected fellow backstop Chadwick Tromp’s contract from Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles (33-44) moved first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, sidelined since May 30 with a right hamstring strain, to the 60-day IL to make room on their 40-man roster.

Handley, 27, left the Orioles’ 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday following a collision with third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. on a play at home plate. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said after the game that Handley was undergoing a “full body” evaluation.

“He’s had a couple of (concussions) in his past, so whether you’ve had past concussions or not, the level of concern is really high,” Mansolino said Monday.

“That’s an ugly collision right there, in a lot of ways and you watch the tape and you can’t feel anything but fortunate that Jazz tried to veer off. As you watch that thing, Jazz didn’t really have anywhere to go and he made an attempt to get out of the way. Thank goodness. Otherwise, it can be a little bit worse.”

He joins Adley Rutschman (oblique strain) on the injured list after the latter injured himself during batting practice Friday. Rutschman is expected to be out through the All-Star break. The Orioles have 11 players on the IL, and Handley is their 22nd to go on there this season.

“There’s no self-loathing, there’s no feeling sorry for yourself,” Mansolino said of the Orioles’ injury woes. “We’ve won plenty of games here recently, not being at full strength. So, I just think it’s kind of the next-man-up mentality that we see across all sports, football, basketball, baseball. I don’t think it’s abnormal, and I think these guys are resilient.”

Tromp, 30, joins the Orioles for the second time this season after going 0-for-4 in two games in late May. He’ll serve as the primary backup for Gary Sánchez, who caught all but one inning of Baltimore’s three-game series in New York over the weekend.

The Orioles listed Tromp at catcher, hitting ninth, for their series opener against the Texas Rangers on Monday with Sánchez batting cleanup in the designated hitter spot.

Orioles utility man Jorge Mateo (left elbow inflammation) was cleared to begin a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday. Mateo has been participating in baseball activities for the past week, and he took groundballs on the field on Monday.

Outfielder Tyler O’Neill (left shoulder impingement) resumed his rehab assignment with High-A Aberdeen on Sunday and he plans to spend this week in Baltimore, commuting to Double-A Chesapeake to continue his progression.

Left-hander Cade Povich (left hip inflammation) is expected to go out on a rehab assignment before returning to the Orioles’ active roster, according to Mansolino. The interim skipper wasn’t ready to share a specific date for Povich’s return.
