A Baltimore man was convicted of murder for pushing 28-year-old Christopher Foster to his death on the train tracks of the city’s Shot Tower Metro SubwayLink station in April 2023.
Jurors found Joseph White, 41, guilty of second-degree murder following a trial this week in Baltimore Circuit Court, online court records show.
A judge subsequently sentenced White to 40 years in prison — the maximum penalty for second-degree murder in Maryland.
In a statement following the conclusion of the case, Baltimore State’s Attorney Ivan Bates called the homicide a “horrific and shocking act” that demanded “the absolute severest consequences.”
“In a callous act of violence, the defendant pushed the victim not once, but twice, ensuring that he tragically fell from the subway station platform to his death,” said Bates, a Democrat. “It is unfathomable to consider the anguish of a family awaiting a loved one who will never return due to such senseless brutality. My heart goes out to Mr. Foster’s family as they navigate this profound and unbearable loss.”
White’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday.
According to charging documents, police officers responded around 5 p.m. to the subway station, finding Foster unresponsive on the tracks. Medics tried to resuscitate him but eventually declared him dead.
Authorities said he died by electrocution.
Homicide detectives reviewed CCTV footage showing a man pushing Foster twice, causing him to fall more than four feet down to the tracks, the charging documents say.
Information left via Metro Crime Stoppers and “also an identification made” led investigators to identify White as a suspect “early in the investigation,” detectives wrote. “The identification was made by a person familiar with the suspect.”
Police arrested White on May 17, 2023.
