Paul cruises in Stockholm Open final

Tommy Paul capped a dominant week by winning the Stockholm Open for a second time on Sunday. The fourth-seeded American, who hadn’t dropped a set this week, beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-3 in the 85-minute final. It was a third tour-level trophy of the year for Paul after his victories at the Dallas Open and Queen’s Club. His only previous ATP title before this year was in Stockholm in 2021. “It’s a very special place for me,” Paul said. “This is where I got my first title a few years ago and to come out and play the level of tennis I did this week, it’s been a dream. I feel like every match I played a little bit better and better. Today, I came out playing amazing, so I was definitely happy with the performance.” It was also a critical win to Paul’s hopes of reaching the ATP Finals for the second time in his career. The 27-year-old moved past Dimitrov in the race to qualify for the season-ending tournament for the year’s top eight players. Stockholm continued to prove mixed fortunes for Dimitrov. The Bulgarian won the tournament in 2013 but lost in the final the following year as well as in 2017.

Jets’ Reddick ends contract holdout

Haason Reddick is ending his long holdout with the Jets and will report to the team on Monday. He agreed to an adjusted contract for this season and the sides will continue to work toward a long-term deal beyond this year. The agreement came less than a week after Reddick was given permission by the Jets to seek a trade. He hasn’t played this season while in a contract dispute with the Jets, who acquired him from the Eagles in late March to boost their pass rush. The Jets reportedly agreed to cover $12 million in NFL-mandated fines that Reddick accumulated in the form of a bonus for him reporting to the team. The star edge rusher, who was the NFL’s lone remaining holdout, hasn’t been with the Jets since his trade was finalized and he passed his physical on April 1. The 30-year-old Reddick was placed on the reserve/did not report list on July 25, the second day of training camp practice. He requested to be traded on Aug. 12, but GM Joe Douglas quickly nixed that, saying the Jets wouldn’t grant his wish. Reddick, a two-time Pro Bowl edge rusher, has 58 career sacks in seven NFL seasons.

Malinin claims Skate America 3-peat

World champion Ilia Malinin won Skate America on Sunday for the third consecutive year, altering his free skate on the fly after an early mistake and punctuating the program with a backflip that had been banned in competition until this season. The 19-year-old two-time reigning U.S. champ scored 290.12 points to finish ahead of Kevin Aymoz of France, whose career-best free skate left him with 282.88 points and earned a standing ovation inside Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen, Texas. Kao Miura of Japan, who was second after his short program, finished third with 278.67 points. “It was a challenging moment for me, just stepping on the ice. I felt way more nervous than usual,” said Malinin, the early favorite for gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics. “That may have played a part in the whole program.” On Saturday, Wakaba Higuchi won her first career Grand Prix event. The 23-year-old used an error-free program to edge Japanese teammate Rinka Watanabe and American star Isabeau Levito. Japan’s Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara won the pairs competition. —AP
