CARDINALS: Free-agent SS Ruben Tejada signed a one-year, $1.5 million guaranteed contract. The Cardinals needed a SS after Jhonny Peralta underwent surgery for a thumb injury that is expected to keep him out until midseason. Tejada hit .261 with 23 doubles, three HRs and 28 RBIs with the Mets last season. His season ended when the Dodgers' Chase Utley broke his right leg with a takeout slide in the NLDS.
GIANTS: After skipping a start, Madison Bumgarner gave up five runs in 22/3 innings of a 9-1 loss to an Athletics split squad. Bumgarner, who missed his last start to give a pull in his rib cage and some nerve problems in his left foot time to heal, allowed seven hits and struck out four. Billy Butler homered for the A's, and Jake Smolinski had two RBIs.
YANKEES: An X-ray and CT scan were negative on OF Jacoby Ellsbury's right wrist. Ellsbury was hit by a 90-mph fastball from RHP Julio Teheran in a 3-2 victory over the Braves. “He had seam marks on his wrist,” manager Joe Girardi said. Aaron Hicks will play CF if Ellsbury is out for any length of time, Girardi said. ... Michael Pineda allowed one run on four hits in four innings, and Chase Headley had an RBI double.
EXTRA INNINGS:Zack Greinke pitched scoreless ball into the sixth inning, and the Diamondbacks beat a Rangers split squad 11-1. Greinke struck out seven and walked one in 52/3 innings of four-hit ball. ... Robinson Chirinos homered over the RF fence 272 feet away, and the Rangers overcame home runs by Eric Hosmer, Salvador Perez and Lorenzo Cain to beat the Royals 13-6 in a split-squad matchup at the Alamodome in San Antonio. ... Chris Sale allowed two runs on six hits with three strikeouts in 51/3 innings as the White Sox beat the Dodgers 4-2. ... Mookie Betts hit his fourth home run, and Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run shot as the Red Sox beat the Cardinals 3-1. The game ended after five innings because of rain.
