Anne Arundel County Police started a car chase Tuesday afternoon that ended in Washington, D.C., with two people dead.

Officers in Annapolis spotted a vehicle that matched the description of an armed robbery suspect near Bestgate Road around 12:15 p.m., Anne Arundel Police Chief Amal Awad said at a news conference. Awad said officers pursued the vehicle west on MD Route 50 into Prince George’s County but did not specify where they stopped their chase.

The car then passed into Washington, where it was spotted and pursued by a U.S. Park Police officer. The vehicle crested a hill, crashed into a tree and caught on fire just inside the city line around 1 p.m., Chief of the U.S. Park Police Jessica Taylor said at the news conference. Two people in the vehicle were declared dead at the scene and one was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Taylor said.

Taylor also said officers recovered a gun they believe was thrown from the vehicle before it crashed.

The vehicle, a white BMW, split in two in the crash, and is suspected of connection to at least six robberies outside banks in Prince George’s County over the past week, according to 7News in Washington.

“Our hearts go out to all of the people who have fallen victim to these suspects who choose to victimize innocent people and their lives. I also fully recognize there will be families grieving as a result of the decision these young individuals made today,” Awad said.
