As soon as Mackenzie DeWees tipped the ball into the basket late in the first quarter, cheers erupted from the Manchester Valley sideline.
The Mavericks senior point guard had just surpassed North Carroll grad Caitlin Bach as Carroll County’s all-time leading scorer.
DeWees entered Wednesday’s game against South Carroll with 1,776 points, needing seven to beat Bach’s 1,782. She scored eight points in the first quarter, 25 overall, and now has 1,801 for her career.
The game was paused for a brief celebratory announcement as DeWees and her mother, Mavs coach Heather DeWees posed for a picture with athletic director Troy Warehime before the game resumed. The host Mavericks (9-2, 4-1 Carroll County) defeated the Cavaliers (6-6, 3-3), 54-44.
No. 5 Catonsville 73, Woodlawn 27: Jamelia Barrett scored 25 points and Jasmine Dickey had 21 points to lead the host Comets (8-2) past the Warriors (3-5).
No. 7 Howard 78, Oakland Mills 42: Taylor Addison scored 24 points to lead the visiting Lions (11-1) past the Scorpions (8-3). Howard led 40-26 in the first half.
No. 15 Mount de Sales 58, Notre Dame Prep 30: Sydney Skalstad had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the visiting Sailors (10-5, 4-2 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference) past the Blazers (4-8, 3-3).
Boys
No. 13 Severn 69, Archbishop Curley 52: Jermaine Hall scored 18 points and LJ Owens had 17 points to lead the Admirals (13-2, 2-0 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference) past the host Friars (6-7, 1-3).
Oakland Mills 67, Howard 40: The visiting Scorpions (6-3) went on a 25-9 run in the third quarter and beat the Lions (2-8). Daeshawn Eaton scored a game-high 20 points for Oakland Mills.
Hereford 54, Owings Mills 46: Senior Brock Moritz (14 points) and junior Mark Suchy (10) scored in double figures to lead the host Bulls (8-3) over the Eagles (6-5).
Khayri Hazel (13 points), Christian Smith and Obie Holloway (11 each) led Owings Mills.
