A 50-year-old man who worked as a substitute teacher for Frederick County Public Schools was arrested Wednesday on child pornography charges.

Daniel Patrick Vandervossen had been placed on unpaid leave and removed from Frederick County’s substitute roster in the weeks leading up to his arrest on 11 counts of child pornography possession, according to a notice that the school system sent to parents Thursday.

The Frederick Police Department said in a news release that officers searched Vandervossen’s home and vehicle Wednesday and collected evidence in connection with their investigation, which began in September.

Vandervossen, who did not have a defense attorney listed in court records, was taken into custody at the scene. He was released after posting a $5,000 bond, according to court records.

The 50-year-old had worked at several FCPS elementary schools “most recently since September 2023,” the school district said in its notice. The municipal police department is “confident that none of the materials possessed by the suspect contain images of FCPS students,” the school system said in a follow-up.

“At the time of his hire, there were no flags raised through fingerprinting or background check procedures,” the school system said.

The school system said that Vandervossen most recently worked at the following schools: Ballenger Creek Elementary, Blue Heron Elementary, Butterfly Ridge Elementary, Lewistown Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Middletown Elementary, Middletown Primary, Oakdale Elementary, Orchard Grove Elementary, Parkway Elementary, Spring Ridge Elementary, Tuscarora Elementary, Valley Elementary, Walkersville Elementary and Waverley Elementary.

Those with concerns or information are asked to contact Frederick Police’s tip line at 301-600-TIPS (8477).

Vandervossen is scheduled for a Dec. 3 trial in Frederick County District Court.
