Balto. Co. police say officer shot 5-year-old boy
The 5-year-old boy wounded during a shootout Monday in Randallstown was shot accidentally by a Baltimore County police officer, the department said Friday.
Police fatally shot the boy's mother, Korryn Gaines, 23, during an exchange of gunfire inside her apartment. Kodi Gaines was wounded, and police initially said they were investigating whether he was shot by the officer or his mother.
“As a result of an additional medical procedure performed today at Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Baltimore County Police believe that a round fired by a tactical officer struck Kodi Gaines, the five-year-old who suffered non life-threatening injuries,” county police said in a statement Friday.
The boy was injured in the left cheek, police said. He was in good condition this week, they said.
Police had gone to Gaines' apartment to serve a warrant. They say Gaines refused to allow officers in. Nearly seven hours into the standoff, police say, officers and Gaines exchanged gunfire.
Police said they would not release the name of the officer who shot Gaines, citing “an unprecedented number of threats” against its officers since the shooting.
On Friday, about 200 people gathered for a candlelight vigil for Korryn Gaines outside Baltimore City College, the school she graduated from in 2010.
Gaines' cousin, Creo Brady, spoke during the vigil, saying that Baltimore County police unjustly took Gaines' life.
“She wasn't careless, she was fearless,” Brady said to the crowd.
Brady also said police deliberately kept Gaines' family members from trying to talk to her during the standoff.
“We asked several times to talk to her,” Brady said. “My aunt said, ‘Please let me save my baby's life.'?”
