The Lakers traded guard D’Angelo Russell to the Nets for forward Dorian Finney-Smith and guard Shake Milton.
The Lakers also sent forward Maxwell Lewis and three second-round draft picks to the Nets on Sunday.
Russell averaged a career-low 12.4 points for the Lakers this season in a diminished role under new coach JJ Redick, who had vowed to unlock the point guard’s formidable offensive game. Instead, Russell was removed from the starting lineup in early November, and he struggled to make a consistent impact as a reserve, with his shooting percentages declining significantly from his previous two seasons back with the Lakers.
The 6-foot-7 Finney-Smith, 31, isn’t a top scorer, but he’s a steady 3-and-D wing who fills an obvious need for the Lakers.
Russell, 28, is being traded by the Lakers to the Nets for the second time in his career.

The NBA fined Anthony Edwards $100,000 for using profanity during a live TV interview Friday, with the league increasing the amount after penalizing the Timberwolves star for the third time in three weeks. The NBA said in Sunday’s statement that it was taking into account “Edwards’ history of using profane language during media interviews.”
College football: South Dakota State QB Mark Gronowski, the top player in the FCS in recent seasons, told ESPN that he intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Gronowski, who led the Jackrabbits to two national titles, also said he may instead enter the 2025 NFL draft.
NHL: Sidney Crosby broke Mario Lemieux’s Penguins career record for assists on Michael Bunting’s power-play goal and the hosts beat the Islanders 3-2. Crosby, 37, has 1,034 assists, good for 12th in NHL history.
