Warriors 144, Wizards 122
Curry’s 11 3s, 51 points lift defending champs
All-Star guard scores all of his points in first 3 quarters
Curry scored 51 points on 15-of-24 shots from the floor as the Warriors dealt Washington its first blowout defeat of the season, 144-122.
That Curry needed only three quarters to surpass 50 and totaled as many 3-pointers (11) as Washington was simply the cayenne pepper rubbed into the wound. With the loss, the Wizards fell to 1-3 with three more road games remaining on their current trip.
The Wizards played with balance with six players reaching double figures, led by Bradley Beal’s 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting. The team shot accurately, despite a return to the early-season shooting woes from the 3-point arc (12 of 42, 28.6 percent). Washington even scored at will and only trailed 80-73 early in the third quarter.
However, these efforts were diminished by the blinding light of Curry’s offensive show.
In the Warriors’ first five games, Curry has made at least five 3-pointers in each to set an NBA mark, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Ahead of Wednesday’s matchup, Warriors coach Steve Kerr described how Curry’s shooting has buttressed the team while the team’s other sharpshooters are still searching for their mark at the beginning of the year.
“We are kind of used to it with Steph,” Kerr said. “He’s just so consistent and so lethal, but it’s been especially helpful because our other three-point shooting hasn’t really come around yet. That’s only a matter of time especially with KD [Kevin Durant] and Klay [Thompson], but with those two guys starting off a little slowly from the three-point line it’s been really big Steph to be hot from there.”
Durant (30 points) and Thompson (19) combined to make just 2 of 8 threes, but they didn’t need to be on mark. Curry owned the hot hand.
