Baltimore Gas and Electric customers could receive an $80 rebate on their electric bills later this summer, the Maryland Public Service Commission announced Friday.
According to MPSC, BGE customers will receive an average of $80 in rebates applied to two utility bills starting in August or September. The second portion of the rebate is planned for January or February, as electricity and natural gas bills are more expensive in the winter, MPSC said.
“The amount of individual refunds will be based on average customer electricity usage over a year; the estimated refund amount for both phases would be an average of about $80 per customer depending upon the utility service territory,” MPSC said in a news release. “Lower usage customers would see lower credits and higher usage customers would receive higher credits.”
To be eligible for rebates, BGE customers must have had an active account on June 1 and a recorded history of electric usage from March 31, 2024, through March 31, 2025.
The rebates are part of Maryland’s Next Generation Energy Act, a $200 million initiative signed into law by Gov. Wes Moore last month.
This legislation allows the state to phase out coal and oil energy resources while maintaining enough power generation for when these plants close, without directly mandating the closure of existing coal or oil plants. Republican lawmakers criticized the energy package during the session because they believed it would not provide “real relief” for customers and introduced nine amendments to the bill, which the Democratic-led legislature ultimately rejected.
