Edward W. “Eddie” Brown Jr., a former Gilman School teacher and retired stockbroker, died Nov. 13 at the Blakehurst Retirement Community in Towson. He was 85.
No cause of death was provided, according to family members.
“A number of people in your life contribute to your moral compass, and Eddie was one of my largest contributors,” said John Bremermann. “I was a math student of his at Gilman, and he was my wrestling and football coach and mentor throughout my whole life.”
Edward Woodman Brown Jr., son of Edward W. Brown Sr., headmaster of Calvert School, and Gwendolyn Cochran Brown, who managed the home, was born in Baltimore and raised in Baltimore County’s Woodbrook neighborhood. He lived there his entire life until moving to Blakehurst in 2023.
A 1951 graduate of Calvert School, Mr. Brown graduated in 1957 from Gilman School, where he participated in lacrosse, football and wrestling.
At Princeton University, he played lightweight football, captained the lacrosse team his senior year and was a member of ROTC. After graduating in 1961, he taught for a year at Gilman while taking graduate classes at Johns Hopkins University.
During that time, he met Joyce Stevens, whom he married in 1962.
Called to active duty, Mr. Brown served two years as an Army artillery officer in Germany. After his discharge in 1964, he returned to Gilman, where he taught mathematics in the Upper School and coached football and lacrosse.
Mr. Brown retired from Gilman in 1980 and later earned a master’s degree in business at what is now Loyola University Maryland while working as a stockbroker at Investment Counselors of Maryland.
“Eddie was a very interesting guy and changed careers,” Mr. Bremermann said. “He took his math skills and added that to his business acumen at ICM.”
A lifelong golfer, Mr. Brown was a 63-year member of the Elkridge Club. He was a member of the Maryland State Golf Association, serving on its board and executive committees. He also held roles, including vice president, secretary and president twice. He volunteered with the USGA on its Mid-Amateur Committee from 1990 to 2007.
“He was a very good golfer and won the Elkridge golf championship several times. He had a very low handicap his entire life,” Mr. Bremermann said. “He was still tinkering with his game until he stopped playing three or four years ago.”
In addition to golf, the longtime Woodbrook Lane resident enjoyed Saturday and Sunday lunches with family and friends.
Mr. Brown was a member of Roland Park Presbyterian Church, 4801 Roland Ave., where a celebration of life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 7.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Mr. Brown is survived by his son, Edward W. “Teddy” Brown III, of Woodbrook; a daughter, Gwendolyn Cochran “Wendy” Brooks, of Durham, North Carolina; a sister, Jeannette Brown Finney, of Upperco; and four grandchildren.
