Pirates, Nationals: DJ Herz pitched five hitless innings and fellow rookie Dylan Crews homered, helping the Nationals beat the Pirates 5-3 on Saturday in the opener of a split doubleheader. Herz (3-7) was lifted after 87 pitches. The left-hander struck out five and walked three in his first win since Aug. 3. Crews hit a solo drive in the second against Luis Ortiz for his third homer since being called up from Triple-A Rochester last month. The No. 2 pick in last year’s amateur draft also hit a run-scoring double in a two-run sixth that lifted the Nationals to a 4-0 lead. Robert Garcia replaced Herz and retired five straight batters before Nick Gonzales grounded a single into center field with two outs in the seventh. Rowdy Tellez greeted Jacob Barnes with a two-run shot that bounced into the Allegheny River beyond the right-field stands. Tellez’s sixth career pinch homer cut the Nationals’ lead to 4-2. Kyle Finnegan pitched a shaky ninth for his 35th save in 40 chances. Gonzales hit an RBI single with one out but Bryan De La Cruz grounded into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded. The Pirates were no-hit on Wednesday in Chicago. The Cubs’ Shota Imanaga, Nate Pearson and Porter Hodge combined on the gem.

Yankees: Right-handers Clarke Schmidt and Ian Hamilton were activated from the 60-day injured list by the Yankees after recovering from right lat strains, and Schmidt was scheduled to start Saturday against the Cubs.

Mets: The Mets’ Jeff McNeil fractured his right wrist when hit by a pitch and will miss the rest of the regular season. McNeil was struck on a protective guard covering the wrist by a 74.3 mph curveball from the Reds’ Brandon Williamson during the fifth inning of the Mets’ 6-4, 10-inning win on Friday night. McNeil played second base in the sixth but the wrist swelled, he had difficulty taking swings in the batting cage and Harrison Bader pinch hit for him in the bottom half. An MRI Saturday revealed a small fracture. “Frustrated — this is not how you want to kind of end the season,” McNeil said. “I want to be out there with the guys.” McNeil was surprised by the injury. “It barely hit me. Didn’t even hurt,” he said. “So definitely shocked.”

Tigers: Brant Hurter pitched 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball, and the Tigers beat the Athletics 2-1 on Saturday. The Tigers moved back over .500 after losing three of its previous four games. The Tigers (72-71) haven’t had a winning season since they went 86-75 in 2016. Hurter (4-1) entered after Brenan Hanifee got the first two outs as an opener. Hurter allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one.

Red Sox: The Red Sox activated Trevor Story off the 60-day injured list before Saturday’s game against the White Sox. Story had been sidelined with a shoulder injury that required surgery after attempting to make a diving stop on a ball against Anaheim on April 5. He was listed as the Red Sox’s starting shortstop and scheduled to bat seventh in his first game since the season’s opening week. The 31-year-old batted .375 in four rehab games with Triple-A Worcester. “Honestly, the baseball side of it is great. That’s awesome for us, but he’s ready to go,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said on Saturday. “Physically, we feel he’s in a good spot.” The projected recovery time for Story’s injury was six months.
