President Donald Trump’s mass deportation program has intensified political tensions in Washington, with the administration making direct threats against Democratic officials who oppose immigration enforcement.
Trump defended the program, accusing courts of obstructing his efforts.
“If the courts don’t allow us to take people out, if we have to have a court case — think of it, every single person. We have millions of people. We’ll have millions of court cases, figure two weeks a court case, it would be 300 years,” Trump said.
Critics, including judges, have condemned the White House for denying due process to those deported. When asked about upholding the Constitution, Trump responded, “I don’t know.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) was one of the first to criticize Trump’s response.
“President Trump has just admitted that he ‘doesn’t know’ whether he needs to uphold the Constitution. This is as un-American as it gets,” Schumer wrote on X.
Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., also criticized Trump’s remarks.
“Your head should explode when you hear the president of the United States say that he’s not really sure if he’s going to abide by the Constitution,” she said. “He’s the president of the United States.”
In Wisconsin, Gov. Tony Evers advised state workers not to cooperate with ICE or federal agents without legal counsel.
White House Border Czar Tom Homan issued a stern warning, saying, “You cannot support what we’re doing and you can support sanctuary site if that’s what you wanna do, but if you cross that line of impeachment or knowingly, harboring or concealing in the legal alien, that is a felony I will treat it as such.”
Evers responded with a video message, saying, “Chilling, threats like this should be concerning to every Wisconsin tonight and every American who cares about this country and the values we hold dear.”
Trump has deferred questions about the legality of the deportation plan to the Department of Justice, indicating he would follow the guidance of Attorney General Pam Bondi.
