What Annapolis resident Bob Ferry remembers about that spring 40 years ago is not a particular win or loss during the Washington Bullets’ run to the 1978 NBA title — it’s the players.

For the 81-year-old Ferry, it was half a lifetime ago. He remembers the nervousness and excitement of that long-ago playoff run, when the gritty, hard-working team he assembled upset San Antonio, Philadelphia and finally the Seattle SuperSonics (now the Oklahoma City Thunder) en route to the title championship.

The Game 7 win in the Finals came on June 7, 1978. By then, it had already been the longest season in NBA history.

“By the time you get to the final game, the journey getting there has already been more than you thought you could handle — the pressure, the desire to win,” he said. “But it was a great, great experience.”
