Rangers: DH Prince Fielder wept Wednesday as he said health issues were forcing him to end his 12-season major-league career. He was still wearing a neck brace 12 days after his second cervical fusion in just over two years. Fielder, 32, will finish his career with 319 homers, the same number his father had.

Blue Jays: LHP J.A. Happ became the majors' first 16-game winner, combining with three relievers on a four-hitter in the Blue Jays' 7-0 win over the Rays. Happ (16-3) allowed four hits, all singles, to win his 10th consecutive decision. SS Troy Tulowitzki homered and had a season-high five RBIs. ... OF Jose Bautista was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained left knee. He suffered the injury Tuesday after falling while attempting to make a throw from right field. Bautista was on the DL from June 17 to July 25 with a sore left big toe.

Padres: OF Travis Jankowski capped the Padres' scoring with a straight steal of home in the eighth inning and RHP Edwin Jackson limited the Pirates to two hits in seven innings in a 4-0 win. Jackson, who took a no-hitter into the sixth, struck out seven while improving his career record against the Pirates to 10-3. ... OF Hector Olivera was placed on unconditional release waivers by the Padres, who will release him when he clears waivers later this week and be responsible for the remainder of the six-year, $62.5 million contract he signed with the Dodgers in early 2015. Olivera did not play a single game for the Padres.

Giants: SS Brandon Crawford, who went 7-for-8 in Monday's game against the Marlins, homered in the fourth inning to give the Giants a 1-0 victory and their first series win since the All-Star break. RHP Jeff Samardzija threw 52/3 innings to win for the first time since July 8.

Cardinals: 1B Matt Carpenter and 3B Jhonny Peralta homered to back up LHP Jaime Garcia, who needed only 85 pitches to reach the ninth inning as the Cardinals beat the Reds 3-2.

Extra innings: SS Freddy Galvis hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to help the Phillies beat the Dodgers 6-2. Ryan Howard added a pinch-hit, three-run double . ... OF Jayson Werth hit a three-run homer and 3B Anthony Rendon had a two-run double as the Nationals beat the Indians 7-4. ... Benched from the starting lineup once again as his finale approaches, Alex Rodriguez pinch hit and flied out in the seventh inning of the Yankees' 9-4 comeback win against the Red Sox. Rodriguez has just one start and eight at-bats since July 22.
