Panthers at Falcons

KEY MATCHUP: Falcons RB Bijan Robinson vs. Panthers 3-4 defense: Robinson was the eighth overall pick this year and is expected to take the lead role, even though Tyler Allgeier topped 1,000 yards as a rookie last season and Cordarrelle Patterson also returns. Robinson will face a Carolina defense that switched to a 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. Carolina’s run defense struggled at times in the preseason, so Robinson potentially could be in for a big day.

SERIES NOTES: The teams split their two regular-season games last season, each winning at home. It was the third straight year the teams have split their regular-season series.

STATS AND STUFF: Frank Reich started the expansion Panthers’ first regular-season game at quarterback against the Falcons in 1995 in Atlanta. Now, 28 years later, he’s returned to Carolina and will coach his first game for the Panthers in Atlanta. ... The Panthers and Falcons have not made the postseason since 2017. ... Carolina has essentially revamped all of its offensive skill positions with Young, Miles Sanders (from Philadelphia) at RB, Thielen (Minnesota) and Chark (Detroit) at WR and Hayden Hurst (Cincinnati) at TE.

Bengals at Browns

KEY MATCHUP: Bengals LT Orlando Brown Jr. vs. Browns All-Pro De Myles Garrett. The Bengals signed the 6-foot-8, 345-pound Brown in the offseason to protect Burrow’s blindside. He’s had previous matchups with Kansas City against Garrett, who has had his most sacks (11) against Cincinnati and gotten to Burrow eight times.

SERIES NOTES: The 100th installment of the “Battle of Ohio.” ... After losing seven straight games to Cincinnati, Cleveland has won eight of the past 10 meetings. ... Browns coach Kevin Stefanski is 5-1 against the Bengals.

STATS AND STUFF: Throwing to one of the league’s most talented trio of wide receivers, Burrow leads a passing attack that ranked fifth in the NFL in passing yards per game (265.0) in 2022. ... Cincinnati’s defense, which ranked sixth in points allowed per game (20.1) returns its core. The most significant departures were starting safeties Jesse Bates III and Vonn Bell who signed with other teams.

Jaguars at Colts

SERIES RECORD: Colts lead 27-17.

LAST MEETING: Colts beat Jaguars 34-27 on Oct. 16, 2022, in Indianapolis.

KEY MATCHUP: Trevor Lawrence vs. Colts secondary. The Jaguars QB has bigger goals after leading the Jags to the 2022 AFC South title. He’s 2-2 in four games against the Colts with a completion rate of 70.6% — his best against a division foe. It could go even higher if the Colts’ young, largely untested Colts secondary doesn’t improve significantly from its preseason struggles.

SERIES NOTES: Indy and Jacksonville meet in the season opener for the second time in four years. They also played in Week 2 last season. The Colts have won five straight home games in the series, but have lost eight straight at Jacksonville including the 2021 playoff-eliminating season finale. Colts rookie TE Will Mallory attended high school in Jacksonville while his father, Mike, was a Jags assistant. New Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter was on the Jags staff last season.

STATS AND STUFF: Jacksonville won seven of its last nine regular-season games in 2022 before rallying from a 27-point deficit to beat the Los Angeles Chargers to reach the divisional round. It was the third-largest comeback in NFL playoff history. ... Lawrence, WR Christian Kirk and RB Travis Etienne Jr. became the first trio in franchise history to top 4,000 yards passing, 1,000 yards receiving and 1,000 yards rushing in the same season.

Buccaneers at Vikings

KEY MATCHUP: Vikings WR Justin Jefferson vs. Buccaneers DBs. The Tampa Bay secondary features CBs Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean and S Antoine Winfield Jr., the son of former Vikings CB Antoine Winfield Sr. Jefferson led the NFL last season with 128 receptions and 1,809 yards.

SERIES NOTES: The Bucs and Vikings were long-time division foes before realignment in 2002 landed Tampa Bay in the NFC South. They’ve only played eight times in 21 seasons since then, and the Bucs have won six.

STATS AND STUFF: The Bucs repeated as NFC South champions last season, despite finishing with a losing record. ... Mayfield signed a one-year, $4 million contract in free agency and hopes to jump-start his career in a system installed by first-time offensive coordinator Dave Canales. Canales is the former Seattle Seahawks quarterbacks coach who helped QB Geno Smith revive his career last season.

Titans at Saints

SERIES RECORD: Titans lead 9-6-1.

LAST MEETING: Titans beat Saints 23-21 on Nov. 14, 2021, in Nashville, Tennessee.

KEY MATCHUP: The Titans’ revamped offensive line against a Saints defense that was among the NFL’s best with 48 sacks last season. Only Aaron Brewer returns as a Titans’ starter, and he slid from LG to C.

SERIES NOTES: This is the second time these franchises have opened a season against each other and first since 1993. The Saints won 33-21 in New Orleans. … This will be the Titans’ first trip to New Orleans since Nov. 8, 2015. That was the debut of Titans interim coach Mike Mularkey and a 34-28 OT win by Tennessee. These teams have split the past four games with three of those played in Nashville.

STATS AND STUFF: The Titans enter this season on a seven-game skid that cost them a third straight AFC South title last season. … The Titans have a two-game winning streak when opening the season on the road in 2019 and 2020. They’ve won five of six road season openers.

49ers at Steelers

KEY MATCHUP: Pittsburgh’s offensive line against San Francisco’s defensive front. The Steelers signed G Isaac Seumalo away from Philadelphia in the offseason and drafted tackle Broderick Jones and tight end Darnell Washington out of Georgia with the idea of wearing down opponents.

SERIES NOTES: The home team has won each of the past five meetings. ... The 49ers are 6-5 all time in Pittsburgh, but haven’t won in the Steel City since Dec. 15, 1996.

STATS AND STUFF: The 49ers have made the NFC title game the past two seasons and will try to be the first NFC team to reach three straight conference title games since they did it from 2011-13. ... The Steelers won seven of nine to end 2022 and extend coach Mike Tomlin’s streak of non-losing seasons to 16. Expectations will be higher in 2023 with Pickett entering his second season.

Cardinals at Commanders

LAST MEETING: Cardinals beat Washington 30-15 on Sept. 20, 2020, in Glendale, Arizona.

KEY MATCHUP: Cardinals mystery QB vs. Commanders defense. New Arizona coach Jonathan Gannon has refused to say who will start at quarterback, citing what he thinks is a competitive advantage. The expectation is it’ll be veteran Josh Dobbs, whom the Cardinals recently acquired from Cleveland, instead of rookie Clayton Tune.

SERIES NOTES: The Cardinals have won two of the past three meetings. ... Washington has won its past eight home games against Arizona going back to 1999. ... The Eagles beat Washington three of four times over the past two seasons with Gannon serving as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator. ... Ron Rivera is going into his fourth season as Washington’s coach.

STATS AND STUFF: Ertz, who used to play for the Eagles in the NFC East, has 87 catches for 867 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games against Washington.

Cowboys at N.Y. Giants

COWBOYS PLAYER TO WATCH: RB Tony Pollard plays his first game as the lead back after the offseason departure of two-time rushing champion Ezekiel Elliott in a cost-cutting move. Pollard is playing on the $10.1 million franchise tag. He emerged as the most potent playmaker in the backfield last season, but Pollard hasn’t been tested without the benefit of Elliott’s presence. Elliott was better in pass protection.

GIANTS PLAYER TO WATCH: QB Daniel Jones made a bad offense go last season. He had career highs with 3,205 yards passing, 15 touchdowns passes and a 92.5% rating. The five-year veteran also ran for 708 yards and seven TDs. At home, he accounted for 16 TDs and three interceptions.

KEY MATCHUP: The Cowboys offensive line against the Giants front seven. Dallas ran for 345 yards in the two games last season and gained a total of 821 yards. New York failed to get a sack in the two games and Dalllas held the ball for about average of 33 minutes. New York added beef in the offseason, signing tackles Rakeem Nunez-Roches and A’Shawn Robinson, inside linebacker Bobby Okereke, while adding adding linebackers Isaiah Simmons and Boogie Basham in cutdown day deals.

SERIES NOTES: The Cowboys have have won four straight and 11 of the past 12. New York’s only win was a 23-19 decision on Jan. 3, 2021. Dallas is 10-1 against the Giants in openers.

STATS AND STUFF: The Cowboys are coming off consecutive 12-win regular seasons for the first time since the last of four in a row in 1995. Dallas won the Super Bowl that season. …Pollard’s 5.2 yards per carry ranked third in the NFL last season. His 5.9-yard average per touch (rushes and receptions) was the best in the league. … WR CeeDee Lamb’s 10 100-yard games tied Dez Bryant for the second most in franchise history through three seasons.
