Chris Wray drove the length of the court for a layup as time expired and Mount St. Mary's opened Northeast Conference play with a 67-65 win over host Long Island-Brooklyn on Thursday.

The Blackbirds tied the game on Nura Zanna's putback with 4.2 seconds left before Wray took the ball on the run, got to the left sideline and then angled to the basket for the left-handed layup.

Elijah Long (John Carroll) made all four of his 3-pointers and all seven free throws, and scored 21 points for the Mountaineers (3-11), who trailed 30-21 at the half. Junior Robinson made his six free throws and added 13 points. Mount St. Mary's made 15 of 17 free throws in the second half.

Zanna had career highs of 21 points and 17 rebounds, 10 on the offensive end, for the Blackbirds (7-7). LIU-Brooklyn had a 42-27 rebound advantage, 21-8 on the offensive end for 26 second-chance points but shot just 41 percent (25-for-61), going 9-for-32 in the second half and finishing 3-for-11 from distance.

Women

Towson 61, Norfolk State 58: Sianni Martin (16 points) made a 3-pointer to give the host Tigers (7-4) a 58-57 lead with 1:03 to play. She added a rebound and a putback with 10.4 seconds left to seal the win over the Spartans (5-7).

The win broke a three-game losing streak.

Martin tied the game at 53 on a pair of free throws with 3:07 left to play.

UMBC 62, Liberty 51: The Retrievers (4-8) held the Flames (1-10) scoreless during a five-minute run in the first half and won at the Cavalier Classic at Virginia.

Taylor McCarley and Tyler Moore each scored 16 points for UMBC.

Liberty opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run, but the Retrievers countered with a run of their own to take the lead for good.

The Retrievers gave up just six points in the quarter, holding the Flames scoreless for the final five minutes of the half, forcing five turnovers in that stretch.

Long Island-Brooklyn 63, Mount St. Mary's 60: Alexis Carter made her third 3-pointer with nine seconds left to play to bring the Mount (2-10, 0-1 Northeast Conference) to within 63-60, but the next 3-point attempt by Mikal Johnson with five seconds left missed and the host Blackbirds (2-10, 1-0) held on to win.
