ROCKIES: 1B Ian Desmond broke his left hand when hit by a pitch from Rookie Davis in a 9-8 loss to the Reds. Desmond’s absence means the 1B job likely will go to Mark Reynolds, in camp on a minor-league deal.

INDIANS: 2B Jason Kipnis likely will miss opening day because of a sore right shoulder. He will be shut down for two weeks, then tested. Manager Terry Francona said Kipnis’ readiness for opening day “is probably a stretch right now.” Francona can play Michael Martinez at 2B or shift Jose Ramirez from 3B and play Giovanny Urshela on the left side.

PHILLIES: The Phillies acquired switch pitcher Pat Venditte from the Mariners for minor-league OF Joey Curletta. Venditte, 31, had a 5.73 ERA in 15 games for the Blue Jays and Mariners last season. Able to throw with both arms, he’s 2-2 with a 4.97 ERA in 41 games in the majors.

YANKEES:CC Sabathia had no problem with his troublesome right knee but was shelled in his spring debut. The LHP lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing six runs and six hits in a 10-2 loss to the Braves.

EXTRA INNINGS: After six hitless innings over three outings, Clayton Kershaw gave up a home run to the Royals’ second batter, Mike Moustakas, in the Dodgers’ 5-4 victory. Kershaw didn’t yield a homer to a left-handed batter last season. ... Astros LHP Dallas Keuchel pitched three scoreless innings in his spring debut, a 5-4 loss to the Nationals. Astros prospect A.J. Reed belted a grand slam, his fourth homer in 24 at-bats. ... Orioles RHP Chris Tillman called off a bullpen session after 10 warmups caused shoulder discomfort, and manager Buck Showalter said his status for opening day was in doubt. ... Royals C Salvador Perez, injured while playing for Venezuela’s WBC team, will have an MRI on his knee Monday. ... The Nationals placed C Derek Norris on waivers.
