Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., shared a video on X calling on Congress to codify President Donald Trump’s executive orders into law or risk the integrity of the nation.
Executive orders are initiatives signed by the president that direct the operations of the federal government. While they can not be used to create laws, Congress can vote to incorporate an order into the U.S. code, making it legally enforceable. Trump has signed more than 150 executive orders since beginning his second term, according to the Federal Register.
Burchett said the fate of the United States might rely on the ability of Congress to turn Trump’s orders into laws.
“I’m incredibly frustrated this morning,” he said in the video posted on Wednesday. “I fear that we will seriously lose our country. We have got to start codifying these executive orders from President Trump.”
Some Democratic lawmakers also appear to support Burchett’s demand. Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., on Wednesday called to codify Trump’s order which called on drug manufacturers to slash prices.
“I support @realDonaldTrump effort to ensure Americans do not pay more for drugs than those in other countries,” he wrote in a post on X. “Will Congress members stand with $16 billion in Big Pharma money, or with the American people by co-sponsoring this bipartisan legislation?”
Several Democratic lawmakers were outraged over the effort to impeach Trump launched by Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., according to a report on Axios.
Burchett was among other Republican lawmakers who expressed frustration with the House Republicans X account for calling to “get Americans off the sidelines.” He reviled the post as “unbelievable and embarrassing” amid a GOP push to finalize Trump’s “big, beautiful” tax bill.
Multiple lawmakers pointed out that Americans had already given Republicans control of the House, Senate and White House with little to show for it. Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., fired back with “we need to get Congress off the sidelines.”
