In one race, a stunning victory. In the other, victory in stunning fashion.

Alexander Rossi, a 24-year-old American IndyCar rookie, won the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 on fumes Sunday, stretching his final tank 90 miles to pull into the lead as others headed to the pits.

Rossi, a 66-to-1 long shot, ran out of gas after taking the checkered flag and needed to be towed to victory lane before he could sip the signature milk.

In NASCAR's night race, Martin Truex Jr. turned in a performance for the ages on his way to winning the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Truex started on the pole and led 392 of 400 laps and 588 of 600 miles — the most in one race in NASCAR history — to win for the first time this season.
